On October 18, 2026, Anthropic announced a Public Benefit Fund backed by a proposed commitment of 5% of its shares, subject to stockholder approval. Potential uses include donations to nonprofits and direct distributions to specific populations, according to the company’s announcement.

The proposal gives Anthropic’s ambition to share AI’s benefits a concrete equity structure. It does not yet establish a payment program that individuals can apply for.

What Is the Stake Worth?

Anthropic’s May funding round valued the company at $965 billion post-money. Applying 5% to that valuation produces an indicative figure of $48.25 billion. This is a paper estimate based on a historical financing valuation; it is not cash already available for distribution.

The board may also add another 2% of shares for each 50% increase in company value above a defined baseline. Additions are discretionary, with further valuation milestones and governance details expected in the coming months.

Who Could Receive Support?

Anthropic has not announced eligibility rules, payment amounts or a distribution timetable. Direct payments remain one possible use of the fund, alongside nonprofit support.

The fund will operate as a wholly owned LLC rather than a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, giving it flexibility in how support is delivered. Anthropic says equity held by the fund cannot be used for lobbying or political giving in the US or abroad.

The new commitment sits alongside the co-founders’ pledge to donate 80% of their personal equity holdings and an employee equity-matching program in which approximately half of employees participate. Together, Anthropic says, these commitments dedicate roughly 20% of company shares to the public good. That total includes separate pledges; it is not the size of the new fund alone.

A Separate Route Through Paid Work

Anthropic’s earlier Claude Corps initiative offers another approach. Announced in June with an initial $150 million commitment, it aims to place 1,000 early-career fellows in year-long roles at US nonprofits, paying $85,000 annually plus benefits. CodePath serves as the employer of record.

Applicants must meet the program’s requirements, including US work authorization and fewer than two years of full-time experience. These are paid placements, separate from any future cash distributions through the new fund.

One initiative provides work experience; the other reserves equity for broader public support. The real measure of this pledge will be how much paper wealth becomes help that ordinary people can actually receive.
