OpenAI introduced dots on September 29, 2026, as always-on personal AI agents that can carry out work using their own cloud computer and connected apps. The October 9 update added mobile setup and improved coordination with Codex, making it easier for eligible users to create a dot and delegate tasks from their phone.

This guide covers the workflow and the controls you still need to manage.

1. Create your dot on mobile

Update ChatGPT on iOS or Android and look for the dot setup entry. Your account must already have dots access.

Give your dot a name, customize its appearance, and connect the plugins needed for your work. You can also choose to have ChatGPT open directly to your dot’s conversation. See the official mobile setup update.

2. Give it a clear Codex task

Use text or a dot voice conversation to describe the project, desired change, and expected result. For example:

Find my existing website project and ask Codex to fix the mobile navigation. Run the relevant tests and prepare the changes for review. Ask me if the project is unclear. Do not deploy.

A dot can start a new Codex thread or continue an existing one, using relevant context from previous work.

3. Follow progress and review the result

Ask what changed, which checks passed, and what still needs attention. For example:

Check the navigation task. Summarize the changes and test results, and tell me whether anything is blocked.

The supplied demonstration shows a dot coordinating three tasks and returning pull requests for review. Treat that as an example workflow: review the actual changes before approving a merge or deployment.

Dots can also review and edit ChatGPT Work automations when you ask.

4. Try message predictions in Codex

Composer Predictions is a separate desktop beta that suggests your next complete message. Press Tab to insert a suggestion, edit it if needed, then send it yourself.

It currently supports eligible personal Pro users aged 18 or older in local and SSH threads using GPT-6 Astra or GPT-6.1 Sol. Generating predictions consumes no usage during the beta; submitted tasks use the normal allowance.

Start with one small, reviewable task. Once the workflow works for your project, expand to several tasks or recurring work.

What you can do

  • Create and personalize a dot on mobile; communicate through text or voice; connect apps through plugins; delegate and follow up on Codex tasks; use context from previous conversations; review and edit scheduled work.

Where it fits

Assign coding tasks while away from your computer; follow up on bug fixes and prepare changes for review; research topics and draft documents; coordinate recurring reports and project updates.

Pricing

Included with eligible ChatGPT Pro plans, starting at US$100/month, and Business Premium. Tasks delegated to Codex or Work use the normal plan allowance.

Limits to keep in mind

Access depends on plan, region, and rollout. Pro access excludes the EEA, UK, and Switzerland; Enterprise requires admin enablement. Mobile web is unsupported. Connected apps require authorization, and delegated tasks remain subject to usage limits. Review important outputs before acting on them.
